New Mobile Game: Wizards Unite!

Some people may have already noticed that Niantic (the company that gave us Pokemon Go) had been working on a new project; a mobile Harry Potter game. This happened to be Wizards Unite.

Wizards Unite dropped officially in most regions yesterday (June 20th), and it’s been gathering the attention of Pure Bloods and Half Bloods galore (but don’t let the Muggles know about it).

In Wizards Unite, you play a member of the ‘SOS‘ (or Statute of Secrecy) who works with Harry Potter, Hermoine Granger, and Constance Pickering. You’ve been tasked with trying to defeat ‘Confoundables‘ and ‘Oddities‘ that have captured magical creatures, items, and people, and preventing Muggles from finding out about the magical world.

There’s different spells that you use (by tracing a design on the screen – but you need to be quick and nearly identical to get the best score) to defeat the ‘Confoundables‘ and ‘Oddities‘, and you can even get into magical duels to defeat some enemies (like Pixies, Vampires, and Death Eaters).

But beware, you have limited magical spell stamina to cast spells. If you run out you have at least two options; you can stop by an Inn or, you can spend some Gold pieces to replenish about 50 stamina points.

The icon in the bottom left corner is your avatar’s information. Here’s where you can choose your House, Profession, Wand, Title, your Profile Picture.
Unfortunately at this point, your avatar on screen is a blank character with only a change of color based on your house.

Poke Stops, Gyms, Wizarding Challenges, Greenhouses and Inns. Oh my!
In the switch over from PoGo to WU, Gyms and Poke Stops are now Wizarding Challenge locations, Greenhouses, and Inns.

Wizarding Challenges are tasks where you can challenge different Ranks; you have about 6 seconds to gather a group, or solo the challenge and you duel different enemies.
[When I solo’d a Challenge, I had to defeat two enemies given.]

During a duel, you get a chance to attack an enemy, and must defend against their attacks.
How you say?
During the attack phase, you have a few seconds to ‘Press the screen’ and ‘Drag your icon’ around the screen to the location indicated on your foe.
[This took me WAY to long to learn, and I got beat up WAY too many times.]
To defend against attacks, you have even fewer seconds to ‘Press’ and ‘Drag’ in the designated direction to cast ‘Protego‘.

Inns are locations where you can go and replenish stamina with food-based items. You’ll need to ‘cast a spell’ to find out which item you’ll receive, which will give you a different amount of stamina points. After you receive a food item, you’ll have to wait approximately five minutes to be able to pick up a new item.

Greenhouses are locations that you’ll need to return to after a certain amount of time. During your adventures, you’ll pick up seeds, Greenhouses are where you’ll go to to plant the seeds and water them. After a certain amount of time, you’ll go back to the Greenhouse and pick up your plant. However, if you don’t come and retrieve your plant, it’s all for not. You’ll receive nothing in return if you’re too late. On the plus side, like a Lure in PoGo, everyone can participate in the planting of seeds. So instead of receiving one plant, you can receive up to eight plants depending on how many people assist you.

Magical duels are a quick turn-based fight.
Both sides will get a chance to attack, but only you get a chance to defend. If you cast ‘Protego‘, you’ll take lessened damage, if you don’t you’ll take more damage.

Vault is your item carrier. You’ll be able to see your Potions: used during spellcasting, Ingredients: to create potions, Utility: your currencies which are used for your Profession and Dark Detectors, Runestones: used in Wizarding Challenges, and Seeds and Water: used for the Greenhouse to grow plants for your potions.

Profession is available at Level 6, and give you extra abilities and perks in a specific section:
Auror – “Aurors are combat veterans who defeat Foes bu combining their innate leadership with a litany of debilitating spells. Aurors are most effective against Dark Forces.”
Magizoologist – “Trained in the care and preservation of magical creature, in combat Magizoologists focus on healing and helping their Teammates. Magizoologists are most effective against beasts.”
Professor – “Professors are highly adept spellcasters who use their deep magical knowledge to debilitate Foes while also supporting their Teammates. Professors are most effective against Curiosities.”

Potions are the location where you can brew potions in your cauldron. With a similarity to ‘Egg Incubators‘ in PoGo, you can only brew one potion at a time, unless you purchase more cauldrons. You can also view recipes you’ve found out, and see if you’re missing any ingredients for a specific potion.

Registry is where your information about creatures, people, and items you’ve rescued. If you click an item that’s been colored in/”rescued” you can learn information about the item. You have a registry for these collections:
Care of Magical Creatures, Dark Arts, Hogwarts School, Legends of Hogwarts, Ministry of Magic, Magizoology, Magical Games and Sports, Mysterious Artefacts, Wonders of the Wizarding World, and Oddities.

Portkeys is where you keep your Portkeys to be unlocked. Also similar to ‘Eggs and Incubators‘ in PoGo, you must insert a key into a Portkey and walk for it to unlock. There’s two kinds of keys, Gold (which is forever reusable), and Silver Keys (that are only used once – however at each level you get a new key, or you can purchase them with Gold.)
