I’m So Bored At Home, Cheer Me Up!

Are you depressed and bored due to the quarantine? I am too, so I feel you. Sure we’ve got school/work, crafts and hobbies that we already have at home, and books on our shelves we’ve already read and reread.

But what else can be done? Well, a bunch of stuff, but I can get that with so many, yet so few options available, we feel restricted in activities. So in hopes of helping, I’ve listed some suggestions that I’ve been defaulting to that maybe you might like to try/do as well.

Current/New/Upcoming Video Games

Maybe you’re a gamer, like I am. If you are, I’m sure you’ve heard the hype surrounding Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Which might I add, is everything I’ve hoped for and more.

If you know nothing about this game, let me give you the game’s description:
Escape to a deserted island and create your own paradise as you explore, create, and customize in the Animal Crossing: New Horizons game. Your island getaway has a wealth of natural resources that can be used to craft everything from tools to creature comforts. You can hunt down insects at the crack of dawn, decorate your paradise throughout the day, or enjoy sunset on the beach while fishing in the ocean. The time of day and season match real life, so each day on your island is a chance to check in and find new surprises all year round.

If you have a Nintendo Switch, and an interest in menial video game-based chores, this game may be for you. If you do decide to give it a try, I’ve added my friend code below.

Want to try a blast from the past, and one of the super popular Final Fantasy games from the franchise? Final Fantasy VII Remake is scheduled to release on April 10th, 2020, and is highly awaited by fans of the series and JRPGs.

If you’re intrigued in what FFVII has to deal with, here’s the game description:
The first entry in a multi-part saga, delivering a level of depth inconceivable for the original. Mind-blowing story, unforgettable characters, epic battles and technical excellence collide. The world has fallen under the control of the Shinra Electric Power Company, a shadowy corporation controlling the planet’s very life force as mako energy. In the sprawling city of Midgar, an anti-Shinra organization calling themselves Avalanche have stepped up their resistance. Cloud Strife, a former member of Shinra’s elite SOLDIER unit now turned mercenary, lends his aid to the group, unaware of the epic consequences that await him.

Do you like adventure, RPGs, and an open-world concept? Have you tried playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? Though it’s been out since March 3rd, 2017, this game carries so much play-ability with so many side quests it you won’t be bored anytime soon.

Interested in game details surrounding the game, here’s the description:
Forget everything you know about The Legend of Zelda games. Step into a world of discovery, exploration, and adventure in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a boundary-breaking new game in the acclaimed series. Travel across vast fields, through forests, and to mountain peaks as you discover what has become of the kingdom of Hyrule In this stunning Open-Air Adventure. Now on Nintendo Switch, your journey is freer and more open than ever. Take your system anywhere, and adventure as Link any way you

Are you more interested in an action game where you can kick butt as a superhero? Have you tried Marvel’s Spider-Man? It’s been given so many positive reviews about game-play and graphics, they must be for good reason.

Sound interesting? Here’s the game’s description:
After eight years behind the mask, Peter Parker is a crime-fighting master. Feel the full power of a more experienced Spider-Man with improvisational combat, dynamic acrobatics, fluid urban traversal, and environmental interactions. A rookie no longer, this is the most masterful Spider-Man you’ve ever played.

Books And Reading

Maybe video games aren’t your thing, and you’d prefer your story-lines and plots to be on paper instead. No biggie! As you may (or may not) know, the library has online resources where you can download and read or listen to emedia: Axis360 and Overdrive (aka eMediaLibrary – they’re the same thing, don’t worry too much about it).

Obviously the popular books have a wait list for them, and if you want to spend the money (and own the book), you can buy them digitally and read them instantly.

In the meantime, if you don’t want to own the books, I’ve made a few blog posts regarding read-a-likes for the popular books:

Graphic Novels and Comics
The Distance Between Us (Kasie West), One Of Us Is Lying (Karen McManus), The Selection (Kiera Cass), Scythe (Neal Shusterman)
The Hate U Give (Angie Thomas), Six Of Crows (Leigh Bardugo), Sadie (Courtney Summers), Carry On (Rainbow Rowell)
Throne Of Glass (Sarah Maas), To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (Jenny Han), Children Of Blood And Bone (Tomi Adeyemi), Legend (Marie Lu)
Furyborn (Claire Legrand), Fangirl (Rainbow Rowell), Crazy House (Jame Patterson), Artemis Fowl (Eoin Colfer)

Find Something To Make You Laugh

We all know that “laughter is the best medicine”, specifically in situations regarding mental health and stress. As we all have different senses of humor, not everything I post will be funny, but hopefully it will create some bouncing off points.

Are you more of a fan of people talking to you instead of reading or gaming? Maybe books aren’t your thing and you’d rather listen to people talking about a certain topic instead? Podcasts may be exactly what your heart desires!

I made a list of some podcasts back in 2018, which you can find here, but I’ll put some interesting titles below too.

My Favorite Murder
My Favorite Murder is the hit true crime comedy podcast hosted by Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. Since its inception in early 2016, the show has broken download records and sparked an enthusiastic, interactive “Murderino” fan base who come out in droves for their sold-out shows worldwide.

Please note, if you want to avoid language (rumor has it f-bombs are dropped), don’t check out this podcast.

Stuff You Should Know
Stuff You Should Know is just that: stuff everybody should know, served up by Josh and Chuck in the most entertaining fashion. Recent topics? Satanism, the Iowa caucuses, LSD, chaos theory, Rosa Parks, and…yes…more true crime.

Stuff You Missed In History Class
Little-known history comes alive three times a week in this fascinating, comprehensive podcast from the people at HowStuffWorks. You don’t need to be a history buff to get hooked, but if you’re not, you might become one after a few episodes. With a focus on weird events, overlooked stories, and underrepresented groups, this popular series is educational, too.

Oh, like you’ve never wanted to know who would win in a battle to the death between, say, Loki and Darth Maul? Well, if you have a comic book lover or sci-fi fan, you can bet they’ve pondered such deep questions. These feisty debates are scientifically researched — and super fun to listen to.

Teen Girl Talk
Teen Girl Talk joins siblings Franklin and Susie Cota as they joyfully make their way through a menagerie of media made for teens. We’re talking movies, books, tv shows, music and more! Laugh and cry along with the Cota siblings with some bonkers teen media! Too old to be teens, too funny not to listen to.
